At Madison Bridge – Europe & USA’s Leading Technology Recruitment Partner, we have a member of staff working fully remotely from Spain. Although securing the right talent on a remote basis has been successful and beneficial, that doesn’t mean we haven’t encountered hurdles in the process.
First steps
Maintaining company culture for remote workers can be a challenge, which is why we choose to fly our consultants out to the UKfor a week during the onboarding period. This allows those working from anywhere to get some facetime with the team, take part in activities, and learn about the culture. By setting a good foundation at the beginning, work relationships develop more naturally, andcollaboration is encouraged.
Prioritising travel
We also prioritise in-person quarterly reviews to check in with the consultant on a personal level, and our Director James Gunning makes a habit of travelling to catch up with remote employees, especially if they are feeling disconnected from the team.
Technology set-up
Ensuring that your technology is transferable is key for successful remote working. We have a developed tech stack with over 16 technology partners, and it can take a long time to learn the systems. We are data-driven, and our tech stack helps us to keep track of outcomes – it would be clear from an early stage if an employee were struggling and needed extra support, which is why technology will be your best friend.
Businesses should be asking themselves if they are able to provide optimal training online to remote workers who depend on it, and if not, should they be implementing better training practices or supplying more staff to provide online training.
What does the future hold?
Alongside the challenges we have already faced, we also expect internal progression challenges for remote workers. Due to the limitations caused by remote working, it won’t be easy to manage a team or provide extensive training, especially in the Recruitment industry. It is important to outline goals at the beginning of employment to see if a remote set up can support them.
Although there are a handful of challenges to consider, we would still confidently say that the advantages of remote hires outweigh the disadvantages. In order to hire top talent, you sometimes have to look further afield at those outside of your locale.
